Your set day, minute by minute

Palmore Hair Parlor is a roller-set and silk-press parlor on Greensboro Avenue. Alvenia and two stylists wash, set or press, dry and style, and tell you how long each step takes.

The minutes of each step. Length and thickness move them a little.

  1. 25–30 min

    Step 1: Wash

Shampoo, detangle and condition at the bowl, a section at a time.

  2. 40–50 min

    Step 2: Set or blow-dry

Rollers, pin curls or flexi-rods go in on damp hair. For a press, a stretched blow-dry comes first.

  3. 45–60 min

    Step 3: Dry or press

A set dries under the hood. A press goes section by section, with a comb ahead of the iron.

  4. 20 min

    Step 4: Style

The rollers come out, the set is combed to shape, and you leave knowing how to wrap it tonight.

The parlor

A parlor for sets and presses

Warm chairs, hooded dryers and a phone someone answers.

Alvenia opened the parlor to keep the roller set going and to press hair without rushing it. Tell us when you last had a set, and we will plan the day around your hair.

In the parlor

How pricing works

We don't print prices, because a set isn't priced off a list. Here is what sets yours.

  • What decides the price

Your price follows the length and thickness of your hair, the set or press you choose, and the time it takes. A short wrap and set and a silk press on waist-length hair are not the same afternoon.

    • Length and thickness

    • The set or press you choose

    • Time in the chair

  • How levels set the price

Alvenia's chair and the stylists' chairs are priced differently, because their experience and the services they book differ. Ask for any of us when you book, and we will tell you what that means for your price.

  • Add-ons and changes on the day

A trim, a conditioning treatment or a wrap lesson can be added when you book or on the day. We tell you what the addition changes in time and price before we start, and you say yes first.

  • Canceling or running late

We ask for 24 hours' notice to move or cancel, because a set day holds a chair and a dryer for you. If you are running late, call us and we will see whether your set still fits.

Questions

Before your first set day

How long does a set day take?

Most take two to three hours from the first shampoo to the last comb-out. Each service on the menu lists its time, and we tell you when you book if your hair will need more.

Do I need to book ahead?

Please do. Call or text and we will find you a set day, or choose a time on the booking page. Tawnya will tell you when a chair is open.

Should I come with my hair washed?

Come as you are. We wash and condition every head at the bowl before a set or a press, and that wash is part of the time on the menu.

How long will my set or press last?

It depends on your hair, the weather and how you wrap it at night. Your stylist tells you what to expect before you leave, and shows you how to wrap.

Do you do color or relaxers?

No. We do sets, presses, trims and conditioning, and we do them slowly.

Can I see my price before I book?

Prices depend on your hair and the set you choose, so we give yours when you call or book. You agree to it before we start.
